Located in Far North Queensland, Australia, Cairns is a town known for its beauty and popularity with tourists. The town was originally built as a stop over for workers on their way to the gold mines. However, because of its location to many famous Australian sites, the town has quickly become a major tourist attraction.

Cairns boasts a wonderful tropical climate and magnificent rainforest. Not to mention, that with the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree National Park a short distance away, Cairns makes a great start to an unforgettable Australian holiday.

Located nearby, is Port Douglas with its famous "Four Mile" pristine beach. Full of affordable and convenient hotels, Port Douglas is a great place to find lodging. Port Douglas is famous for its annual festivals. Carnivale, occurring in May, keeps the celebrations going for ten fun filled days. In October there is a two weekend festival consisting of "Footprints Music Festival" and "Porttoberfest" a local beer festival.

In 1770, Cairns was mapped out by the famous Captain James Cook. At the time, the town was known as Trinity Bay. A hundred years later the town officially became a working port. With time, Cairns has grown into a prospering city with and interesting mixture of natural beauty and modern city amenities. Located almost fifteen hundred miles from Cairns, is Sidney. Brisbane is a thousand miles away. The great differences that you will find between these cities are astonishing.

Other Cairns nearby attractions include amusement parks that offer entertainment for the entire family. Additionally, the Rainforestation Nature Park and the Tjapukai (an Aborginal Culture Park) are both not only fun but educational as well. Another must see in the area is the Skyrail Rainforest Cabelway, which extends almost five miles over the World Heritage Rainforest and offers wonderful scenic views.

Other offerings that the port area has for visitors include the lagoon, as well as beaches with clear blue waters, and sugary soft sand. No matter when you are traveling there is always something to do in Cairns. With all the options in activities, a Cairns vacation is a must for the smart and choosy traveler.
